What Is the Difference Between the Bug Priority and Severity?

  • Severity directly applies to the bug itself, and priority – more likely to the product in general. The bug severity shows the level and the quality of the interaction between the user and the system or an application. The importance and the urgency of the bug removing are defined with the help of the priority.
  • The bug severity means the system failure probability and the consequences of this error if detected.
  • The bug severity is not frequently changed. This is a constant parameter which is modified only with regard to a new bug information appearance, for example, the additions to the user’s scenario or new possible workaround solutions. The bug priority is dynamic and directly depends on the progress of the product development itself.

Each development process is accompanied with the meetings, calls, and messages between the development and test team and the client. Information sharing takes place regularly.

The bugs priority should also be discussed and defined with all project participants. Conducting regression testing, the specialists consider the severity and priority of all bugs, opened and already fixed.
