A Tester-polyglot: Excess or Necessity?

There are many different languages. This fact is taken into account by software testing company in its work. The clients, in their term, try to adapt the product for the native speakers of different languages.

It is not uncommon when executing desktop testing or mobile application testing, a tester is not acquainted with their development language.

Even so, the testing principles and fundamental elements remain the same. Thus, a tester can conduct performance testing without any difficulties.

What Can Be Tested Without Special Linguistic Skills?

  • Page makeup.

Executing website testing, any visual defects or violations is notable with the naked eye. For instance, headline displacement, different letter and word spacing or even letters overlapping. Whatever the language is, these mismatches are visible at once.

  • Functionality.

Functionality testing involves a well-known to all testers checking procedure. An error message text or any other kind of reporting is easy to be checked with the help of the online dictionaries.

  • An apparent contradiction.

The elementary knowledge of grammar and faculty of “good” and “bad” reception are required. It is good, that many people have these skills. In this case, the most widespread errors are an inverted question mark, the simultaneous use of different types of quotation marks, the sentence beginning with the lower case letter.

  • The letters correspondence in different languages.

Inputting the necessary data, a tester should use the language alphabet which the website or an application was developed for. For example, the German letter “ß”, which is absent in other languages. When developing software in the foreign language, one should pay special attention to the alphabet letters which have no analogues in the tester’s native language.
