How Does State Transition Diagram Promote the Test Cases Writing?

Software testing company does not often practice the state transition diagram and table usage. Some employees have not even heard about such testing tools.

But still, state transition diagram significantly simplifies the test process. It will be easier and more effectively to perform mobile testing, desktop testing or web application testing by using such tables and diagrams.

First of all, a tester should get a grasp of the product function but it is not enough for the qualitative checking. Conducting functional testing, an expert should be well-acquainted with all details and specifics of the system functional.

State transition diagram or table will help a tester to accomplish that. Another one plus of these tools using is the simplification of the test cases writing process.

If a specialist writes tests, orienting and basing on the state transition diagram, then these test cases will cover the system functional at the several levels. There are four such levels.

What System Levels Are Covered by the Test Cases?

  • States. One should create the test cases which will guarantee all system states checking. This method will not ensure an absolute functional testing.
  • Events. A specialist writes tests which will cover all events, described in the diagram. Sometimes the test cases for the states and events checking may coincide. This principle does not also guarantee the detailed product testing.
  • Ways. The test cases should cover all possible system behavior lines. But the using complexity of this principle is that some systems may be cycled and the accurate quantity of the behavior lines is impossible to determine.
  • Transitions. Software testing is focused on detailed checking of all main system aspects. The test cases for checking all system transitions from one state to another will be the most effective.
