What is the Role of Documents During Software Testing?

Though software development and testing are complex, multilevel processes, people used to paying little attention to the documents.

Some novice and experienced testers believe that one can properly perform mobile application testing, desktop testing and web site testing without consulting the documentation, and writing documents is just a waste of time, it can be done hastily by any team member when there is a free time.

Among Important Documents for Software Testing Are:

  • the requirements specification;
  • the requirement analysis summary;
  • test case specification;
  • error reports and requirements to them;
  • test plan;
  • test cases;
  • sanity testing checklist, etc.

Carefully written documents help to simplify relationships with the customers and avoid misunderstanding. Documents clearly determine what the application should be like, what aspects of the application are to be tested, how to prepare error reports for the development team.

Those, who have substantial experience in load testing, functional testing, security testing, etc., can verify software without documents, relying on their experience and knowledge. But in this case one cannot be sure that there will be no complaints from the customers.

So, one should keep in mind that maintaining documents is a support work during software testing, but it shouldn’t be neglected.
